The Scotch Of Japan
Japanese whisky is closer to Scotch than either American or Irish offerings. Several companies produce whisky
in Japan, but probably the best known is Suntory. That’s the one my brother admitted to as being “not bad”. The Yamazaki distillery is actually a
suburb of the ancient capital of Kyoto. Apparently the water there has an excellent reputation, and the place is also famous for its tearooms. There are around 10 distilleries in
Japan, including Yamazaki, Yoichi (part of Asahi Breweries), and Fuji-Gotemba, located at the foot of Mount Fuji in Shizouka. My brother particularly likes White
Oak, hardly a Japanese name, but located on the main island of Honshu. As mentioned, some Japanese single
My brother Gerald, has lived in
Nagoya, Japan, for more than 25 years. I asked him what he thought of Japanese whisky. “Not Bad,” he said. In fact, some of the Japanese-produced
whiskies, particularly single malts, have scored higher than their Scottish counterparts. Whisky production in Japan
began around 1870, with the first real commercial offering in 1924. That came from the country’s first distillery, Yamazaki. (Not Kamikaze.) The style, flavour and aroma of

malts have scored higher than their original “Scottish Cousins”. The production of Japanese whisky
began as a deliberate effort to recreate the style of Scotch whisky. Japanese “Scotch Pioneers” studied the process at great length, even taking great care to pick the regions with the right terrain and climate. Over the years the diversity and
innovation in Japanese distilleries has seen major progress. Their styles range from the peaty styles of Islay to the more traditional and delicate flavours of Speyside. I’m not for knocking the Scottish
export business, but give it a try. Kampai!
