FISHING continued from page 15

Famous for their

worm or minnow. Of course, fishing technique and location is the key to any success story. But, as my old friend Shorty Jenkins often said to me: “That is a secret!” From what my daughter Lyndsey

told me about her experience this past summer, the pickerel are still there. You just have to know where to find them, and have a little luck. This coming July or August, I have every intention of giving Redhorse another try.

Although fishing and camping

on Redhorse was fun, like many of you, I have always wondered what it would be like to catch trophy fish on one of those remote lakes you often see advertised in popular fishing magazines. Well, this past year the perfect

opportunity arose for me to experience some of that action when my daughter Stephanie moved from Ottawa to Rainy River, Ontario. Rainy River is situated at the

very end of highway 11 in north- western Ontario, about two hours this side of Winnipeg, and is part of the “Sunset Country” travel region.

Without rushing, it is a three day drive from Ottawa on highways 17 and 11, navigating through some of the most spectacular scenery you will ever encounter. The town is just a stone’s throw away from Lake of the Woods, which is advertised as one of the best lakes in North America for pickerel fishing. Believe me, those advertisements are right on. Within a couple of weeks of

Stephanie moving, my wife Ann and I started looking for places to rent on Lake of the Woods that were within close commuting distance from Rainy, so Stephanie and her friend Mark could join us and still be within close range of work if the need arose. We searched the internet for days,

and after a couple of weeks we finally decided to send an email to Cheryl and Gary Gauthier who own “Harris Hill Resort” on Lake of the Woods, near Morson, Ontario http://www. harrishillresort.com/ At the time, we were a little

apprehensive about booking because they were a complete unknown to us. So, before making a decision we got Stephanie and Mark to scout the

place out, smack dab in the middle of January. From there, we never looked

back. Staying at Harris Hill Resort week of July was a

during the 2nd

fantastic experience. Cheryl and Gary have seven cabins that can accommodate anywhere from 2 to 12 people. We stayed in cabin #1 which has two bedrooms and can easily accommodate 4 people. All the cabins are housekeeping

capable and have all the amenities; including: wireless, satellite TV, air conditioning, propane BBQs, fire pits, etc. – you name it and they have it. As they say on their website: “Just bring your food and beverages, your family and friends, and you are ready for an enjoyable vacation on Lake of the Woods.” With boat in tow, we arrived at the resort on July 8th

and before

unpacking, we decided to take a stroll down to the lake for a quick look. That is when we met Dave and Heidi Ivall, who were on their way to see Cheryl for minnows. After chatting for a couple of minutes, we realized

it was they with whom Mark had made arrangements to take us on a guided tour of the lake, to show us a couple of fishing hotspots, recommend typical jig-head selections, and point out places where we shouldn’t travel. Without even checking in

and within minutes of arriving at the resort, Stephanie, Ann and I were catching our limit of pickerel for that night’s dinner. I quickly learned that I would have to purchase an entire new array of jig-heads, all of which are available at the resort. It was a great introduction

to the lake, and it set the tone of fishing and camaraderie for the rest of the week. So, for the uninitiated to

pickerel fishing in Northern Ontario, I recommend you travel to Lake of the Woods − where the fishing is incredible!

Dave Brown adds: “Here’s to everyone who made our trip so memorable. Ann and I hope to see you again sometime soon.”
