The Misfits car club is exactly what you envision when you think of the word: the members are all individuals with unique personalities. They don’t fit the typical car club member mold − but they’re attracted to each other by the shared passion and love of all classic cars. If you have always felt that you were out of step with traditional car clubs, that you did not quite fit in − then read on, MacBeth! I just may have found you a place to call home.
I was driving out to Carlsbad Springs to meet up with Misfits member Lou and was not quite sure what to expect. As usual, a number of questions and topics came to mind – which, I might add, went right out the window once I got there.
Over the last couple of years I have had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing a number of car club presidents, but never an entire club! I pulled into Lou’s place and within 10 minutes I was handed a cold beer. The chips and smoked nuts came out, and the gang showed up. Now let’s be clear. The Misfits is not your traditional car
club. They have no bank account, no by-laws, no struc- ture, no president. I thought long and hard about trying to describe them, and then it came to me. They embody all the right reasons why we all form car clubs. They love classic cars and trucks, all makes and models. Friendship is the key to the group. Each individual brings his or her particular experience to benefit the rest of the group – along with lots and lots of stories.
There are 12 Misfits in all: Lou Helbling (1971 Plym- outh Roadrunner), Bev Elder (1974 Plymouth Valiant), Steve Prashker (1978 Chevrolet Camaro Z28), Clayton Bray (1970 Pontiac Bonneville), Charlie Barradas (1973 Javelin AMX), Mark Schmidtke (1969 Pontiac GTO), John Beauchamp (1973 Javelin AMX), James Bull (1970 Pontiac GTO), Rob Mitchell (1986 Camaro IROC), Don Hamilton (1940 Ford Pick-up), Jim Miller (1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS) and Chris Welch (1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme).
