The Transfer Window
Sir David Michels, Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Director of Marks & Spencer, will step down from the Board having served since 2006. Jan du Plessis, who was appointed to the Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2008, will take over as Senior Independent Director.
David Adams,
often credited as the man who saved Jessops, is to step down from his post as non- executive chairman to be replaced by Martyn Everett. Mr Adams was formely the finance director for House of Fraser.
John Lovering
has joined the board of GHD (Good Hair Day) as non- executive chairman. Lovering is a former chairman of Debenhams, Mitchells & Butlers and Peacocks.
Venu Nair
has been appointed as Head of India operations for Marks & Spencer, replacing CEO Martin Jones who is returning to the parent company.
Richard Taylor
has been appointed as the new marketing director of high end department store Selfridges.
Stella David
has been appointed to the C&J Clark Board of Directors as a non-executive director.
JL Kingston helps clear up Canbury Gardens
Partners (staff) at John Lewis Kingston have joined forces with the Thames Landscape Strategy to support the charity’s ambitious restoration plans for
the historic Canbury Gardens in Kingston upon Thames. The Victorian pleasure gardens, which once drew visitors from across London, are undergoing a £1.5 million project to restore them to their former glory. A team of volunteers from John Lewis kick-started the project by clearing invasive plants which have prevented native wildflowers from flourishing along the River Thames. The team will revisit the site regularly to keep it clear.
A royal visit for Fortnum & Mason
Queen Elizabeth II, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall took a royal outing to London’s Fortnum & Mason store. The Queen, Kate and Camilla greeted military personnel at the iconic department store before exploring the food hall where they were presented with luxury
hampers. They viewed the store’s Diamond Jubilee products and unveiled a plaque for the regeneration of Piccadilly. The royal trio also enjoyed tea with staff and associates of the store at their restaurant which has been renamed The Diamond Jubilee Tea Station in honour of HRH’s 60 year reign.

Once restricted to the privacy of the bedroom dressing table, 67 per cent of British women now apply their make-up on their morning commute by public transport according to research from Debenhams. With the average journey to work taking 45 minutes, it leaves ample time for British women to cover up blemishes, lengthen eyelashes, powder their noses and apply lipstick. High street retailer, Debenhams, found that 67 per cent of women regularly apply all their make-up on public transport
and a staggering 89 per cent of women often ‘touch up’ their make-up whilst travelling.
Footwear of the future
Moda Footwear has become a platform for discovering some of the most promising design talent with its annual ‘History in the Making’ design project in collaboration with De Montfort University (DMU). The project challenges final year footwear design students to develop a range of shoes using a period in history or tradition as inspiration. Six finalists then have their work showcased at Moda. This year the project culminated in Isabel van de Sand being crowned the winner at last month’s Moda Footwear trade show at the NEC Birmingham. The striking design was inspired by the German festival Oktoberfest.
Selfridges grammar
lessons Selfridges department store has offered a series of grammar lessons to shoppers at their Oxford Street branch. The lessons were hosted by ex-businessman turned teacher, Mr N M Gwynne, who took his captive audience through the finer points of English grammar. Those in attendance were encouraged to participate and most seem to have enjoyed Mr Gwynne’s enthusiastic teaching style. The talks were part of the department store’s “Words Words Words” season.

sharing the lessons they have learned through their experiences in the industry and hints and tips relevant to all. These speakers include Drapers Multi-Award winner Deryane Tadd of The Dressing Room in
St Albans and Paul Turner- Mitchell from 25Ten Boutique in Rochdale. The Independent Retailer Month UK Launch Conference takes place on Sunday 1st July at Cranmore Park near Birmingham.
