Mary Portas’ Bottom Line launches of Channel 4

A new Channel 4 programme, Maryʼs Bottom Line, sees retail expert Mary Portas attempt to reinvigorate the British manufacturing industry. British manufacturers are unable to compete on price with manufacturers from the Far East but Mary believes that British consumers would be prepared to pay a little more if they knew that products were being manufactured in the UK

because of the boost it would bring to the economy and because they would know that all items were being ethically produced. Leading by example, Mary attempts to start her own production line to manufacture 100% British knickers, in order to show consumers the value of buying British and to show manufacturers that it can be done.

market The British Retail Consortium’s (BRC’s) Multichannel Retailing conference is a timely reminder to the Government to keep the pressure on Europe over the creation of a true single European online retail market. The annual event, which attracts more than 150 key figures from UK retailing, will consider how the sector’s responding to the latest developments in technology and embracing changes in consumer habits. Prime Minister David Cameron and other EU leaders have spoken up about the economic importance of a digital single market but actual progress in Europe has been slow. The BRC wants the Government to maintain the pressure on the EU to overcome problems such as different consumer rights rules and incompatible payment systems.
