The 1951 AGM of the Institution of Engineering Draughtsman and Designers (shortly to become IED) included an address by the President, Lord Westwood of Gosforth, calling for the organisation to be recognised with a Royal Charter. Fast forward 61 years and on 30 January 2012 the seal of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was applied to the Royal Charter which was formally presented by our Patron His Royal Highness Prince Philip at St James’s Palace.

The process of gaining a Charter has been a long one, with a few wrong turns and lots of hard work, sweat and even some tears along the way. The current application began in earnest in 2008, with a working party established by Council to investigate the current processes and guidelines regarding gaining Her Majesty’s approval for the work the Institution carries out. We have had extensive help with the most recent application from Keith Lawrey at the Foundation for Science and Technology, whose expert opinion and never-ending experience has been invaluable. We have also benefitted greatly from the support of a wide range of individuals from industry, government, education and other professional organisations, all of whom have been more than willing to put their name to the application.
The Charter has been granted in recognition of the invaluable contributions to society made by our Members. IED Members are at the forefront of design, researching, developing and implementing new technologies to the benefit of all of society, sharing knowledge and best practice across the design community and encouraging a younger generation of designers to enter the profession and so to continue the excellent work well into the future.
improve services to Members. This can only enhance the profile, standing and world- wide significance of the IED, not only to our Members, but to the wider engineering design community.
“Since inception, the Institution has continually evolved to encompass and support the ever changing needs and abilities of the design industry and to ensure that it
remains a relevant and dynamic organisation. The award of the Charter serves to recognise all that has gone before, but also to propel us forward to this next chapter in our history.”
Chief Executive Libby Brodhurst, who has been a key player in the successful application to achieve Chartered status said: “I am delighted for the IED Membership on the grant of the Charter, the award is
The award of the Charter shows the world that the IED is a truly professional organisation, made up of truly professional individuals who, together, have a huge influence and impact on all walks of life and whose work contributes greatly to ‘UK plc’, the global economy and the development of humankind itself. All Members of the Institution, past and present, are to be congratulated on this magnificent achievement, it is well deserved.
