At a Champagne reception held at St James’s Palace in London last month, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh formally presented the Institution’s official Royal Charter to President Sir George Cox, heralding an exciting new beginning for the IED.

Presenting the award, His Royal Highness, Patron of the IED since 1954, told the 100 plus guests “he was delighted to be able to present the Charter” and that “the importance of the role of designers could not be under-estimated, or the support provided to them by the IED over its many years of service.”


Accepting the award, President Sir George Cox said: “This is a very special moment for the Institution and it is a great honour to receive the Charter from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh who, as well as being Patron of the IED for many years, has also had a keen and active interest in design through the Prince Philip Designers Prize. I am delighted to accept the Charter on behalf of the Institution and our thanks must go to all those who have worked so hard to achieve this.”


He praised the Prince’s lifelong and genuine interest in design, which, he said: “went way beyond surface interest” and thanked him on behalf of all the Members of the IED.


David Maffin, Chairman, said: “I was so struck by how The Royal Charter presentation evening embodied so much of what is positive about the IED: Pride in the Institution, a real passion for design and the profession, but more than anything else, a genuine warmth and friendship between fellow Members.


“For me, the Royal Charter is a recognition of our professionalism and a ‘coming of age’ as an engineering institution. This is something every one of us can be very proud of. The Charter brings prestige and influence and can be a platform to underpin our other plans to
