We recently discussed plans for this year. We would like to hold a public meeting about the rapid increase in drone warfare. Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), i.e. aircraft which are controlled by pilots on the ground, often thousands of miles from the action. They can remain airborne far longer than manned aircraft and are also cheaper. They are used for military surveillance and for lethal strikes. It appeared that, up to October 2011, 175 children had been killed globally in drone attacks.

US drones used in Afghanistan and Pakistan are controlled from a base in Nevada. The RAF drones squadron will be based at Waddington, Lincolnshire, from 2012.
