AYNUILT Gaelic Choir (Coisir Ghaidhlig Thaigh An Uillt) is back into rehearsals for 2012 – the 15th
anniversary since it reformed.
The village choir had dis- banded more than 50 years previously, so it was a rather ‘shaky’ start to competitive singing at the 1997 Mod in Inverness, as current choir president, Davy Paterson, told West Coast Review.
‘Since our debut Mod in 1997 we have gone from strength to strength, but ask any origi- nal member about the that start,’ Davy said.
‘Over the years the choir has established itself as one of the top rural Gaelic choirs in Scotland and has won many competitions at both local and national level. ‘Apart from competing at

As usual the choir will take part in provincial Mods and work- shops throughout the year in preparation for this year’s Na- tional Mod in Dunoon. Fifteen years on and there is a more assured approach to competitions, but Taynu- ilt’s now streetwise singers weren’t always so. ‘We were like startled rabbits
in the headlights when we Mod,’ said Davy. ‘We didn’t fare too well but the choir had tremendous spirit though and, with a lot of hard graft, we steadily improved and started winning competitions. winning at the Dunoon Na- tional Mod in 2000 which felt as though we’d won the World Cup! ‘Apart from being a success- ful choir, I also believe we’re a very sociable bunch and have deservedly earned our reputation as being ‘The Hap- py Wee Choir’.’
