“We have looked at this area in great detail
MHRV can lead to lower energy bills and greater fuel efficiency for the household
and believe that better ventilation can solve this problem of overheating for the majority of our homes,” says Tinsley. That is exactly where mechanical heat recov-
7°C for example, the cold air drawn into the unit mixes with the outgoing air at a comfortable 20°C. The mechanical ventilation won’t make up the entire difference of 13°C but it will take care of most of it and that will help you achieve savings on your fuel bills. The unit is normally installed in the loft space
and discrete ducts move the air through the whole house. Settings on the remote controller regulate how much air comes in and this can be anything between 100 and 520 cubic metres of air depending upon the size of your building. The other advantage of a system like this is
that in those couple of hot weeks in the summer when we think we need air conditioning, the unit can keep the home fresh and cool with a special bypass facility that brings cooler, night- time outdoor air straight in to stop those uncom- fortable evenings when bedrooms can become too hot to sleep.
ery ventilation can play such an important role, as demonstrated by the retro-fitting early in 2011 of an MHRV system into a five-bed home in Northumberland, built in 1999. The owners wanted a system that would pro-
vide effective yet cost efficient ventilation through-out the home with minimal disturbance during operation. A mechanical heat recovery ventilation system was installed in the loft area of the 207m2
property in a day, including the
installation of all ductwork and supply and extract grilles. The bedrooms and bathrooms now benefit
from a constant fresh air supply through the sup- ply grilles, whilst the stale air is removed via the extract grilles. Due to its low energy consumption (19W at
low fan speed), the unit runs most of the time maintaining a clean, fresh internal environment with humidity control. Barely audible at low speed and extremely
quiet at high speed, the system significantly improves air quality in the home with hardly any noise disruption. “We are highly satisfied with the installation,
which runs quietly in the background and defi- nitely recovers energy we would otherwise be throwing away,” say the homeowners. “Extract from the bathroom and en-suites is remarkable;
silent but totally effective.” Further cost savings were made by linking
the unit’s bypass function to an air source heat pump to maximise heat recovery whenever the heating is running. “All in all, mechanical heat recovery ventila-
tion is one of the best ways to ensure you can maintain a comfortable temperature and humid- ity level throughout the home, whilst also helping to reduce running costs,” ends Tinsley.

Rega’s unique WhisperFlow® technology ensures that even when operating at full ‘Boost’ mode (usually during the morning bathroom rush hour!) the system remains whisper quiet - unobtrusively and effectively venting stale, damp air, replacing it with air that’s been gently warmed and filtered.
