It was the oldie- worldie style that really drew us in. You don’t see this in modern houses – Bob Richardson

Bob and Joy Richardson loved their quintessen- tially English farm, but felt that after 60 years in the family, it needed to pull its weight more as an investment. In 2007, the 80 acre rural retreat stood

proud as the last remaining farm in the small vil- lage of Cranfield, West Bedfordshire. Having worked the arable land themselves

for nearly 30 years, Joy and Bob (who is also a partner in a Wayleave consultancy business) had one eye on their two childrens’ inheri- tance.“We sat down one day and said there’s

a plot of land, but if we don’t build on it then all you inherit is exactly that: a plot of land. Well then, why don’t we build a house on the grounds?” said Bob. After exploring several English country show

houses in nearby St. Neots, the Richardsons fell head over heels for the exposed timber beams, charming dormer windows, Inglenook fireplaces and valley tiles. It summed up the simple and rustic, yet carefully choreographed beauty of an old English home.
