many of the modern-looking pieces he has used to furnish Scotts on the Rocks came from his showroom. “It is modern, functional and simple and that is the look we were after,” he explains. “We like modernism with colour, not minimal- ism. And when you have six grandchildren you have to accept clutter as well. The house was designed to have fun in and be somewhere to relax. It’s a party house.” It has also gone down well with the neigh-

House of the Year award in Northern Ireland and the Belfast Telegraph’s Most Desirable Home in Northern Ireland. Last year it won the Master Builder of the Year award for David Charleton. “He is my hero, and he deserves to be Master Builder of the Year,” adds David Scott.

What was the high point of the project “Everything: it was all a wonderful experience, but the very best bit was when we’d excavated the soil from the basement and put in the con- crete floor slab. I stood on it and thought, ‘This is it’.”


The low point was: “Waiting for planning permission – it was very frustrating as it seemed the planning service did not function for 18 months.”
