The Rotary Foundation Foundation is the heart of Rotary.
Everything that the Rotary Foundation achieves from paying for Polio vaccines to digging well for water is only possible because of your contributions.
The Eradication of Polio
The Foundation is continuing the effort toward our Primary Goal ‒ the eradication of Polio. Through Polio Plus the Rotary Foundation has led a global effort to rid the world of Polio, Rotarians have contributed more than US$1billion toward that goal. Rotaryʼs US$200 million challenge is the Foundationʼs response to the US$355 million in challenge grants from the Bill and Melinda gates Foundation.
District 1160 has risen to that challenge and as of November 2011 with some seven months to go we have raised some US$430,238, but that is still almost US$20,000 short of our District target of US$450,000 (75 x US$6,000). Twenty of our clubs have raised US$6,000 or more, and 21 clubs are within US$1000 of the target, but 21 clubs have contributes US$3,000 or less.
PDG Howard Caskie who is leading the District challenge will be contacting clubs who have yet to reach US$6,000 in December to cajole, push and encourage them to meet the target before June 30th 2012.
Certificates will be issued at the January District Council to all clubs who have achieved or surpassed the target.
The Foundation changes lives.
Through grant funding and the programmes of the Rotary Foundation, Rotarians carry out far reaching projects based on Rotaryʼs 6 areas of focus. Communities can have access to safe water and health care.
Matching Grant ‒MG1069294 ‑ is one such on‑going example the work is due to be completed by the end of November 2012. It has been made possible by a Foundation Matching Grant through the Rotary club of Dublin and the Rotary club of Weston Super Mare (UK) to enable a local village, Luhimba in Tanzania, to construct and an irrigation scheme which will provide sustainable crop irrigation and greatly benefit the local community. Paul Temple (pictured) from the Rotary Club of Weston Super Mare, with members of the Village Council in Luhimba. An opportunity has arisen for a club or clubs within District 1160 to utilise a Matching Grant to partner the Rotary club of Preston ( Australia ) District 9790 to improve the life chances of the local Aboriginal population ( if interested please contact

The Foundation Funding Committee is now accepting Matching Grant and District Simplified Grant applications. To date grant applications are under consideration from The Rotary clubs of Drogheda, Ballymena, Naas, Cork, Enniskillen, Comber, Mallow, Belfast, Tralee, Lisburn and a District Matching Grant of $5000.00. The grants applications process will close 31st March 2012.
You make it happen
The Foundation is supported solely by voluntary contributions. Our goal for 2011 for the Annual Programs Funs is US$100.00 per capita, please encourage your club to donate generously and consider becoming a Sustaining member to help increase the work your Foundation can carry out, here at home and abroad. Communities also benefit from the work of Rotary Peace Fellows because of the work of Foundation.
Currently our District has two Peace Fellows contributing to world peace. Rachel Rafferty, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Coleraine has just started her studies at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and Fay Ballard , sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lisburn who has recently has completed her studies at the

Every year November has traditionally been the month when Rotarians concentrate their minds on all things Foundation. Our own District Foundation Seminars were scheduled for the month of October to help address any issues and answer any questions Club Presidents, Presidents Elect and Foundation Chairs wanted to ask and to enable Foundation up‑dates and examples of our own District programmes and projects to be shared. Three of the Seminars have been delivered so far ‒ in Enniskillen (13 in attendance), in Mallow (21 in attendance) , and in Newtownabbey (21 in attendance), in all to‑date some 26 clubs have been represented. It was very rewarding to have representation from our youngest club, Ballycastle, at the Newtownabbey seminar.
