January 2012 International Film Festival Rotterdam 1 n
Screen International is delighted to publish this special supplement to celebrate the 2012 International Film Fes- tival Rotterdam. As this year’s poster proclaims, the festival is a showcase for film which is “poetic, daring, weird, hilarious, sick” and it’s a declaration which affirms the 41-year-old festival’s reputation as an edgy event that is unafraid to push the boundaries and experiment. This year is no different and the 15-film Tiger line-up is full of promising titles from first and second-time
directors that hopefully will fulfil some or all of the adjective criteria set by the poster. Under director Rutger Wolfson, IFFR is confirming its place in the film calendar and central to the festival’s
draw for industry is the legendary co-production market, CineMart. If the Tiger line-up features film-makers of promise, the CineMart line-up features projects from numerous film-makers with established reputations includ- ing Urszula Antoniak, Kelly Reichardt, Alexei Popogrebsky and Aditya Assarat. Our supplement explores several of the festival programmes, dips into the CineMart line-up and takes the temperature of the vital Hubert Bals Fund. Welcome to Rotterdam.
