ReFINEments Offers Consignment with Style
Judi Platz acquired the space
in downtown Shepherdstown formerly occupied by Raw Earth Organics earlier this summer for her designer and vintage consignment store, ReFINE- ments. ReFINEments features new and gently used designer and vintage clothing as well as an assortment of shoes, purses and other accessories. During the four months she has been opened, Platz has acquired 180 consignors. Fifty percent of sale proceeds go back to the consignors which keeps money cycling through the communi- ty, Platz said. “When I shop at Kohl’s, 50
cents of every dollar doesn’t go back into another person’s pocket,” she added. Platz, a Shepherdstown resi-
dent, is a former senior vice president for a software com-
hosting clothing-swap nights and makeover nights for wom- en. She wants the store to be a place where women can hang out, connect, and empower one another, Platz said. Some of the items currently available in the store include 30 plus new-with-tags, high-end bags, a vintage, red, Christian Dior hat, a vintage fur head piece, a pair of $1,000 Donald J. Pliner boots on sale for $500 and a large, Coach leather trav- el bag. There is an 18-karat gold belt for $4,000, and many great finds priced under $20, Platz said. All jeans sell for $8. “There is only one of every-
thing in here, and every woman who walks in here finds a trea- sure,” she added. Platz offers cash or store
credit for consigned items. Pric- ing ranges in the low to mod- erate price range, depending upon the pieces. Price points are typically significantly lower than retail. Platz accepts new or gently-used items for consign- ment. She will also soon offer men’s and children’s items. The shop is at 125 W. Ger-
man St. Open Monday–Sunday 10am–7pm. For information,

Opens She-town Store Since 1981, Needful Things
has operated out of a vintage building in downtown Charles Town. Now the owner Melissa Glasscock has opened the com- pany’s second store in Shep- herdstown on East German Street. It’s a thrift-style store that sells both new and second- hand items. Shoppers can find prod-
ucts ranging from novelty an- tiques and collectibles to new, name-brand clothing and video games. Items also include fur- niture, household items, and electronics. Currently, the Shepherdstown location sells men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry, accessories and small electronics. Glasscock expects to sell books and DVDs at the new location soon. Most of Needful Things’ in-
ventory comes from the ac- quisition of delinquent storage units, the contents of which are
sold at auction after the owners have missed multiple payments. Glasscock also sometimes pur- chases inventory from other stores going out of business. Needful Things has been in
the business of buying these storage units for some time, but the popularity of these auc- tions has recently exploded in the past several years as a
