FEB. DEADLINE Jan. 15th

around to committing to a New Year’s resolution, here’s one that can add a bounce to your step. Get out a couple times a month and listen to live music. We’ve spotlighted three emerging venues this month, for three very different rea- sons. What each has in common is the creativity and drive of the bold entrepreneurs who pur- sued their dreams during the Great Recession, and how each reflects the distinctive style and imagination of its owner. The first is the Opera House

in Shepherdstown. It’s been around for a hundred years, but in the year since it was bought by Lawrence Cumbo the Opera House has taken on distinc- tive new life. It’s still known by many as a classic movie

house, but the Opera House has emerged as one of the premiere music and performance venues in the region. From Bluegrass to burlesque, to ballet and be- yond, Opera House Live is hap- pening—in a concert setting, no less. See page 13 for the story. The second is dish American

bistro in Charles Town, owned by Doug Vaira. Three years ago Doug set out to create a restaurant focused on excel- lent locally raised food. He’s done more than that. He’s got a scene on Washington Street— from lectures, to tastings, to music. Head to dish for jazz and acoustic music. Listen over din- ner or drop by for a seat at the bar or the cozy listening room. See page 21. Our third music spotlight is The New Yorkshire on German

Street in Shepherdstown. San- dra Lechliter dreamed of open- ing an English pub with better food than you’d find in the typ- ical one across the Pond. And she wanted music. Since open- ing the Yorkshire last year, Sandra’s pub has emerged as the place to dance to live music on weekends. See page 7. Add to these venues the Mecklenburg Inn, Blue Moon, and Shepherd University and there’s a lot of musical variety around the county. Want to support the local economy? Lively Up Yourself in 2012. Pay the cover, have a draft or sip of vino, put a few dollars in a musician’s pocket. And, as they say at last call, don’t forget to tip your server.
