cannot believe that it has been that long. This all started as an idea when I did a waterfront news column for Bud Leavitt at the Bangor Daily News. While there it was easy for me to see that no one was covering the entire waterfront of the Coast of Maine. My initial idea was to publish a weekly supplement in the Bangor Daily, but the boating season was coming to a close and they decided to hold off. I decided not to and purchased a desktop publishing system. If only I knew what I was getting myself into. I started with the thought that people needed the news fast, so why not do two issues a month, which I did until 1993. At that point I decided that only the summer months, April to September, should be double and I would go to one a month in the winter. What I failed to realize is that the amount of time that I was spending on the road really did not allow me to adequately cover the news. In retrospect, I really do not know how I did 24 issues a year, or even the 18. Three years ago I switched to one issue a month and designed the runs to spend ten days on the road. This allows for much better coverage, and more time to adequate gather the news and take more photographs. Then last spring I expanded slightly, spending one day on the North Shore of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. This is only for distribution, which widens the audience for the advertisers. However, I am becoming much more interested in the North Shore history, which has some strong ties to Maine.

Oh there have been mistakes. The biggest is probably a lack of focusing just on publishing this paper. I have been, and still am, involved in too many things. If I can help I certainly try to. I bought the 117-foot tug SATURN to save her from the scrap yard; a day each week at the Penobscot Marine Museum keeping their library open and doing research; and numerous boards, like Maine Built Boats, Maine Lobster Boat Racing, Maine Retired Skippers Race, Propeller Club, Tugboat Enthusiast Society and Winterport Historical. None take a lot of time, but when you add them up it is significant. Then there is my vision of an on- line maritime library. I could spend every waking hour of the rest of my days working on this and would have only scratched the surface. However, it is all extremely satisfying, at times it makes a difference, and I am not willing to give up any of it. I have discussed this before, changes due to the Internet. It is amazing what has transpired over the last 20 years. Most news is instantaneous on the Internet and this means that most newspapers are losing readership. People are also buying differently. Unfortunately there is seldom any loyalty. It is a different world and unless you adapt, you will not survive. I have often joked that when I retire I am just going to sit back and do my research. The more I think about it the more I realize I could not give up being on the road and doing this publication. So hopefully, I and Rachel, for this would certainly be a different publication without her assistance, can find another 25 years in us!
