lina and already has been given the green light to begin construction on the first one. The design for these rescue craft was derived from designs by George Greenough, who found jet skis inadequate to rescue surf- ers in large surf. The GARC was designed to be dropped out of a C-130, survive the land- ing, be started in minimal time (approximately 90 seconds) and be driven off to perform a rescue.

The GARC construction is all composite and designed to survive being dropped out of a transport plane. A lot of development has gone into minimizing weight, and increasing strength and performance.

cottages so transition from one to the other is very easy.

Besides doing the annual maintenance on over 116 boats they are also rebuilding floats and will add a new aluminum ramp on the fuel dock.

It is hard to know what Hodgdon Yachts in East Boothbay is doing. Over the last several years they have been under contract by owners not to disclose anything about what they were doing for them. This can pose some interesting problems when you are out marketing the yard. However, let us just say they are busy and busy enough to need about another 20 employees.

What can be said is that Hodgdon Yachts recently signed a contract to build

four tenders. These limousine tenders are used to get from the larger yacht to shore or for bouncing around a harbor or bay. Two of the tenders will be 10.5 metres in length and the other two will be 8.6 in length. The larger ones will be used to go between the yacht and shore and the smaller ones for tooling around the harbor. The small ones are muck like a Lincoln town car with a leather interior. Once finished all four boats will be going to Europe. Two other ones, much like these, were deliv- ered last year and were well received at the Monaco boat show this fall.

Another company under the Hodgdon umbrella is Hodgdon Defense Composites, which recently signed a contract to build the 13-foot 6-inch GARC (Greenough Advanced Rescue Craft) for the U. S. Air Force Special Command. Hodgdon is subcontracting with Rapid Response Technology of North Caro-

These rescue craft will be built at 2 Town Landing Road in Bath, which Hodgdon re- cently leased from the City of Bath for two and a half years at $1,500 per month until March. At that point it will then go up to $2,000 a month. Most of these funds will be used by the City to upgrade the building. Originally this building was to be leased by Maine Monolite LCC in 2004, but this did not hap- pen. During talks with this company the City of Bath requested and received a Community Development Block Grant for $400,000 with the understanding that Maine Monolite would create 40 jobs. U. S. Windblades leased the building in 2007, but they went out of business in 2010.

There have been some changes to the requirements in the Block Grant allowing this deal to happen. Presently there are two em- ployees and they hope to have ten within the next year.

The hope to get production up to four craft in 2012, but the ultimately goal is to see orders for 50 a year.

A J-37 was recently sold and is heading to China. They have gone over everything on this boat. She has had engine work, rudder rebuilt, replaced some core in the deck, and added new electronics. She will first head to Florida where her owner will pick her up and sail her to China.

In the spray booth is a Pogo 30, which is being Awlgripped. She will also have her annual maintenance done.

A Septre 43 is getting new rigging after losing it off of Newfoundland. She is also getting new life-lines, toerail and then will be Awlgripped.

There are a number of boats that will have their bottoms stripped and barrier coated this winter. These include a J-34, a Cape Dory 30 and a Sabre 34.

A Herreshoff 34 will be in to have her steering system changed. They are removing her tiller steering and replacing it with a quad- rant system all contained in a teak box. They are also doing a steering system on a Hinckley Bermuda 40.

A Sabre 34 is in for a new complete electronic package.

A Hunter 27 is in to be repowered. She has an 8-hp engine, which is going to be replaced with a 14 horsepower Beta. She is also having some wet core in her deck re- placed, and adding water and holding tanks. A Wesmac 38 was started last winter and is being finished out as a pleasure cruiser. They have installed her engines and jets, tankage, and deck. They are now adding in the soundproofing to the platform and in- stalling her interior.

The Bunker & Ellis pleasure cruiser they rebuilt last season is back for annual mainte- nance.

French & Webb in Belfast has been doing a lot of architectural work recently. Right now they are doing a project for Tho- mas College, the interior for a home in Belfast and another interior for a home in Finland. For new boat construction they are building a 37 foot cold molded sailboat de- sign by Mark Fitzgerald of Camden. The hull is done and they are now working on the deck framing and cockpit. This will be followed by
