“[Lungs (pictured above) is] supposed to be about industrialization and how the human race is moving in


two different directions. The modern, urban countries are smogging up the top of the page while the more traditional, “developing” countries are hanging back in their own little puddle at the bottom, and the middle ground is getting smaller and smaller. “The point is supposed to be that we can’t breathe with a face full of smog, but we can’t breathe underwater


either. In the city, it’s relatively easy to stay alive, but everything is so cramped and colorless and polluted that sometimes it seems like you’re hardly living. Farther from civilization, you can see the world in all of its beauty, but sometimes you really have to fight for your life. This picture is about balancing in the middle.”
