HOW SHESEESTHINGS

A

rt, to me, is creative self-expression,” senior Chelsea Foster said. “ I think that art comes in many forms.” Fos-

ter has been perfecting her particular brand of art throughout her high school career. She is interested in candid portraiture – photos of people. Because of the novelty of Foster’s craft,

there is a certain reluctance by classical art- ists to accept photography as a true art form. “I know a lot of [artists] have a hard time believing that the digital arts … are actually art,” she said. “I understand [that], because no, I didn’t really create a photograph by hand. I pressed a button that captured a digital file on a memory card.” But despite this fact, she considers her

work true art all the same. “I would argue that photography is a real art form,” she said. “When I take a picture, I'm taking a snapshot of reality, my reality. I'm capturing a 5x7 inch moment of my life. Tis is my world, this is what I see and this is the best way I can explain it.” Behind every artist is a good tool. Or,

in Foster’s case, many. “I have probably close to ten cameras,” she said. Each one serves a specific purpose. “I really like the way polaroids look,” she said. “I just think they’re very different, and I like the whole immediacy aspect, of course.” On the other hand, Foster’s Rebel is the one that sticks with her, no matter what. “I’d probably say my Rebel is my favorite,” she said. “[I like it] for convenience reasons, but it’s also a really good camera for the money that it cost.” Foster’s camera may be a good deal, but

all the equipment she uses adds up. Foster’s lenses, cameras, and tripods total thousands of dollars. “[Photography] is really expensive, but I love it,” she said. “You always need more [equipment].”
