Hynes became involved in the AMC show Te Walking Dead for his senior project this past August as the script supervisor’s intern. He was also a walker, generally known as a zombie. In Te Walking Dead series, a police officer leads a group of survi- vors in a world overrun by zombies. “When I first saw the show, I was struck by its artistic grandeur, the sweeping cinematic style and of course the zombies,” Hynes said. “Once I arrived on set, met the ac- tors themselves and watched them at work, I realized the power of their performance.” Trough a friend of his sister’s,

Hynes managed to become the intern for Amy Lacy, the script supervisor on set. Lacy is the com- municator between the set and the people in the cutting room. She holds the only full script for the show, and therefore carries what is referred to as the ‘Bible on set’.“My job is to support the director, the editor and the actors,” Lacy said. She determines which takes will make their way to the final cut of each episode. Being the script su- pervisor also requires Lacy to watch for continuity of details on set, such as the amount of blood and sweat the actors have on them. From take to take, details such as blood spat- ters must match up. As Lacy’s intern, Hynes talks, “to

everyone on set to get a feel for what they’re doing,” Hynes said. “I attain and especially value the outlook of the lower-ranking people because no one ever talks to them. I get their perspective to understand what they do and what they think. Anybody who’s willing to use my help, I try to give it to them as best I can.”

Hynes becomes undead In addition to interning for the script supervisor, Hynes plays an

extra in Te Walking Dead as a zombie. At the surprise invitation from Lacy, Hynes became one of the undead on his last night on the set. “Te set is as addicting as any drug,” Hynes said. “I was ready to stay late that night because it was the last night of shooting. I got out there and of course flipped out at [Lacy’s] zombie offer.” Hynes was airbrushed and blood-splattered, then sent out to the set to join a bus full of other zombies. “It's below freezing outside,” Hynes said. “12 hours later, we finally finished. I was sore from doing the ‘zombie shamble’ all night and was frozen to the core. But I was as happy as could be. It was the climax of my time on set.” Te studio is located in Senoia, GA, where Hynes drives down to meet up with Lacy every Wednesday. “You’re not really [in the middle of nowhere,] but you get the feeling [that you are],” Hynes said. “It’s gorgeous out there.” Hynes spends five hours on the set each week for the Work-

I used my connections and ended up on set of Te Walking Dead.” “I look forward to it every week,” Hynes said. “I was captivated by

the direness of the situation and the commitment from the actors to depict the apocalypse in an earnest way and with such gusto.”

participation in the show. “Te Walking Dead is great because it’s an opportunity that allows him to be like a sponge and absorb all of the knowledge presented to him,” she said. “He’s observing everything around him and discovering what it really means to be on the set of a TV show. Te fact that it’s about zombies just makes it better.” “People say if you can survive being on the set of Te Walking
