INDEX news Editor’s Eye
A very happy New Year to all my readers. I say my readers because I am the new editor of Canterbury Index Magazine. My name is Mary Gold and I have lived in and around this very fi ne city for almost 20 years. I am continually astonished at the wealth of facilities, the people, the buzz, the vibrancy. All the big hitters are here when it comes to shops but I particularly like the small and quirky independent boutiques which you won’t fi nd anywhere else. Visitors have been coming to Canterbury from all over the globe for centuries, looking for heritage, history and spiritual fulfi lment. They are sure to fi nd a warm welcome, people who speak their language and even a restaurant serving the cuisine of their homeland. We’ve got a vibrant magazine for you this month: If you’ve made a New Year resolution to get fi t in 2012 why not pick up some tips from our focus on cycling and joining a gym? If you are determined to be a better cook or just fancy cheering yourself up with some comfort food then have a look at our fabulous recipes for pies.

Help revive
our river A word from Bob Jones, chairman of Canterbury City Partnership. The River Stour, which winds through the city centre, is one of Canterbury’s greatest natural assets and we should be proud of its history and its ecology. Canterbury City Partnership is working with local community groups and the Environment Agency to keep the river rubbish-free and enhance water quality. We’re looking for more volunteers to join our team so we can give the Stour a really good clean up on a regular basis
once a month. It’s
a great way to help revive the river, improve the city centre environment and meet people. If you’d like to get involved, please contact CCP on 01227 787921 or email

Parent John Gisbey says: “My son Spencer, goes to Cobbes Meadow every Tuesday. He has severe learning diffi culties. It has given him a purpose in his life where he has gained confi dence and skills he otherwise would not have achieved. The volunteers there do a marvellous job.”
If you know someone who would benefi t from riding at Cobbes Meadow or you would like to
volunteer, contact Carole Mounce on 01227 831963.
