2000th recruit for child development unit
Two-year-old James Clark was the 2000th subject to walk through the door of the University of Kent’s Child Development Unit.
Accompanied by his mother, he participated in a short eye- tracking study which will tell scientists how children learn to understand basic sentences. KCDU was established in 2010 to study child development from the age of 18 months through to school ages and beyond, with a particular emphasis on language, cognitive and social development.
As with all young visitors to the unit, James was welcomed into a relaxing child-friendly environment before moving onto the study – all at his own pace. His mother Kate said: “James is a very sociable little boy and it was clear from his reactions that he had an enjoyable time. He enjoyed
the warm-up exercises, which consisted of playing and naming toys, as well as a cartoon DVD. “Afterwards he spoke about his experience, merrily talking about the day and his time at the university.”
Dr Kirsten Abbot-Smith,
co-director of the unit, commented: ‘The response we have received from parents has been encouraging and supportive – without their help and participation few of these important studies could have taken place. I still fi nd it incredible that in just over a year we are working with our 2000th volunteer.”
She added that the unit was looking for more volunteers, as they need fi ve times more participants for studies. Further information may be found at:
