recently a bit of an Alice in Wonderland effect has taken place – some bathroom elements have started shrinking, while others have taken on oversized proportions… CP Group’s Elite Spice Red tiles, for example, covers both trends in one fell swoop – they’re now available in a new large format size (30x60cm), which can add real impact to both walls and floors, while the tiny mosaics in the same range break up large expanses of tiles, and are ideal for creating a focal point behind basins and washstands. Inspired by the intense

t’s been a while since anything radical has happened in the world of bathroom design but
colours of an Indonesian spice market (and in fact quarried from a single region in the country), Elite Spice Red is available in warm shades of red, brown and orange. These are colours rarely seen in natural stone, with highlights of red and brown both coming through well in the detailed veining of each tile. There are also complementary glass borders to offset or blend with the collection, available in seven colours and two different sizes – we particularly like the pearl gold glass border for an opulent look in the bathroom. Shower trays are another
bathroom element that fall into the ‘shrinking’ category – not in terms of surface area, but in depth. The Flight Low shower tray from Mira is a simple – and
cheaper – alternative to tanking the bathroom to make a water- tight wet room, having a 40mm profile instead of the usual 90mm and giving the shower area a wet-room look without the hassle.
As well as looking good,
the trays offer protection against mould growth thanks to Biocote®
, which is proven
to reduce bacteria and mould build-up by up to 99.9 per cent. This antibacterial agent means that the trays are protected for their lifetime, as Biocote®
never
wears off or washes away. The high-gloss finish on the trays guards against discolouration,
scratches and chips too. If the ‘small is beautiful’ look appeals to you, check out Aston Matthews’ new designer range of sanitaryware, which includes the Zen Shallow Basin – so sleek, and it takes up very little space on the counter top – or the Gallant towel rail from Aeon, which is not only small but also wall-mounted so it frees up floor space: perfect for recreating boutique-hotel chic within your own four walls. And what will be
happening, design-wise, in the kitchen for 2012? Well, storage solutions are going to be key (sighs of relief all round).
