women in the offi ce. The boutiques of Canterbury, Faversham and the like are offering unique pieces or outfi ts that can be styled in different, exclusive ways – which is exactly what we’re after. The recent Channel 4 TV
programme, Mary Queen of Frocks, highlighted the issue of a lack of affordable clothes for the over forties. From my informal Twitter survey, it seems that Kent women agree that there’s a need for more fashion for this age group, and a desire for more men’s fashion stores was also expressed. The people of Kent have spoken: it’s time for the shops to react! There is much discussion among local fashion fans about the need for more inspiration
in our area. The shows, as an example, at Royal Victoria Place, Tunbridge Wells, have been praised for providing a wonderful insight into the new collections to be found within the stores based there, but these need to take place more frequently and on a larger scale to prove truly inspirational. It’s time to spark the imagination of Kent shoppers, both male and female, with styling classes, catwalk shows and exposure to what’s on-trend – and the demand for such events is clearly there. As one local resident tweeted, “the fashion- hungry ladies of Kent need to be delighted more often with cutting-edge fashion.”
The general consensus is that
Kent is getting it right – although there needs to be more affordable choice and more going on socially for fashionistas. Fashion-themed events are taking off, though. Index Canterbury’s sister magazine in Tunbridge Wells reports that there have been soirées in local boutiques plus there was last summer’s Pantiles Fashion Festival, with its pop-up stores – all cited as innovative ideas. Kent shops offer great service
from really clued-up staff, and fabulous styling is becoming an important part of the overall shopping experience. These days, offering this kind of ‘extra mile’ service is essential for anyone who wants to run a successful fashion business.
