‘Lioness: Hidden Treasures’ is the final album to be released by the late Amy Winehouse, following up her triumphant and award winning ‘Back to Black.’ ‘Lioness’ is filled with demos of classic singles, new covers and future hits. The compilation album, organized by famous friends Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, was released as Remi felt the world needed to hear her recordings, rather than letting her mix tapes “gather dust.” Approximately £1 from each album sale will be in aid of The Amy Winehouse Foundation, which has been set up by Mitch Winehouse in order to assist, support and care for young people in the UK and abroad.
Lioness: Hidden Treasures is a pleasure to listen to. Winehouse’s deep, contralto vocals deliver passion and coat every lyric with soul and style. This album emotes a strong, calm atmosphere and highlights a rich, relaxing elegance that isn’t present throughout ‘Back to Black.’ This album also brings out a bolder and freer side to Winehouse’s performances, as many of the songs (Wake Up Alone, Between The Cheats)

were recorded in the first take. Most of the tracks on the album have a very jazzy influence, as they were recorded during the creation of her first album Frank that was partly inspired by Mr Sinatra himself. Alongside her more tranquil moments, there are dashes of Motown and 60s vibes also – especially in Best Friends, Right? In Winehouse’s own songs, her sassy and confident lyrics thrive alongside the raw drum beats and music harmoniously.
All in all, Winehouse’s posthumous album is a success and celebration of her life, wrapped up in her own emotion and honesty. Already a number one album in the UK, these Hidden Treasures are simply golden in a generic music industry.
