Nicola Roberts Student Interview

We sampled Super Mario on the album, it really shouldn’t work, but it does

Nariece Sanderson from Broxbourne school poses the questions for our cover star Nicola Roberts. Nariece has her own online blog at solostinstereo.tumblr. com

So your debut solo album Cinderella’s Eyes was released on the 23rd September this year. Were you pleased with the general reception of

the album? Yes! Really pleased. When you are putting an album together you’re completely submersed in it. You can’t envisage the

day when people will hear it or what they will think. The reviews really stumped me! To get 7 stars from NME and great reviews in the Guardian for example is just amazing. I have the feeling you get out of something what you put into it. I’ve been working on the album for 18 months seeing that little square box at the end is so rewarding.

You’ve been working with producers involved in the genre of electropop, and this album has a powerful electronic sound to it. Is this the genre you have always wanted to work

in?

Yes. Electro pop is such an imaginative genre, which is almost unlimited in what you can do. We sampled Super Mario on the album, it really shouldn’t work, but it does. There are a lot of levels to electro. A band like Metronomy are for example at the other end of the electro spectrum.

Were you inspired by any particular artists in the

creation of this album? I’ve just been really open to everything. I want my musical horizons to be as wide as possible. Literally loads of things from hard rap through to Ladytron.
