JOCK HILDEBRAND IN CONVERSATION WITH

PAT FIELD

“WE ALL WANT TO HAVE MEANINGFUL WORK AND CONTRIBUTE. IT MAKES US FEEL GOOD. AND IF YOU FEEL GOOD, YOU ARE ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTING TO SOMETHING THAT’S BIGGER THAN YOURSELF. THEN YOU CAN INFECT OTHER PEOPLE WITH ENTHUSIASM TO DO THAT AS WELL.”

Jock Hildebrand: Hi Pat. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. Perhaps you can start by telling us a little bit about your background. Pat Field: Sure. My academic background is in Natural Resource Management. I’ve spent about 30 years working in various forms of fish and wildlife management, habitat protection, strategic planning, and negotiating land use plans in a number of different countries including the Congo, Central America, the US, Australia and New Zealand. My work on various habitat projects with animals influences my art because I’m so connected to nature.

JH: When did you pick up the interest in sculpture as a medium in particular?

PF: I was always involved with art in school, but about 30 years ago I was out of work and I ended up volunteering with a guy who had a tombstone business in Mission. He was from the Czech Republic and he taught me the ropes – how to use tools, polish and carve granite and marble. Then I took off from there with my own ideas.
