and the children’s sculptures are a wonderful discovery. The park also serves as a trail head to a multi-use trail that travels along a creek- way. Trail users may start their walk or ride at Sculpture Park or they may stop for a rest before finishing. The past art winners continue to visit the park year after year to view their pieces and to show, with pride, their artwork to friends and family members. In addition, the bronze re- creation of the permanent sculptures allows the upkeep and operations of this park to remain beautiful, well maintained and cost effective.
A SIGN OF THE TIMES? After 17 years, in the summer of 2010, thirty- six sculptures were stolen. The discovery of the theft was devastating and the loss of the thirty- six sculptures created a concern regarding the security of the remaining pieces. In order to ensure the remaining pieces were preserved, City staff began to explore options to address the situation. Unfortunately, the stolen sculptures are irreplaceable.
Looking for opportunities to renew the park, City staff approached Roseville Arts!, the local non- profit public benefit arts agency in Roseville, to partner with the City on a solution that would save the remaining artwork and revitalize the park with a new and sustainable art/sculpture program. Roseville Arts! was eager to collaborate with the City of Roseville and to reach out to the community to engage their participation.
Roseville Arts! immediately began brainstorming new ideas for a public art program. The first step was to identify a solution for the remaining sculptures. The proposal suggested that the remaining bronze sculptures at the park be removed and relocated to more secure locations within the three Roseville Libraries.
The second step proposes a new art program which engages Roseville fifth grade school children to create ninety-six tile mosaics from colorful repurposed tiles, maintaining the original
