Italy is the best place to come and learn this craft and I want to be the best… in Florence they taught me the traditional methods which are vital to be a good goldsmith.

Master Goldsmith

Lucinda Handy is an extraordinary woman. Originally from Tasmania, she travelled to Florence following her dream to become a true artisan of the goldsmith trade.

town. “Everything to do with jewellery is easy here, but everyday bureaucracy is a nightmare!”, smiles Luci. Being an artisan, Luci mostly gets commissioned for her work. “Working with a client

is an amazing experience. Normally I like to meet them so I get a feel for their taste but sometimes, when the client is overseas, it’s not possible. Then I need to make detailed drawings and ensure that the design and materials are exactly what the client has in mind. I love the challenge though.” “One of my favourite types of commissions is engagement and wedding rings.

You become involved in the whole marriage process and it is gratifying to know that one of the most important symbols in a person’s life originated from my little workshop.” “At the opposite end of the scale, I also like to melt down old, unwanted jewellery

(yes, old wedding rings too!) and make something fresh and beautiful from it.” Luci has exquisite taste which is reflected in her art. All of her pieces are a reflection

of her skill as a goldsmith and designer. Luci has a very interesting family history too. She is the step-granddaughter of C.S.

Lewis of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe fame. Luci was commissioned to design jewellery pieces with a Narnia theme for the actors in the recent films. “I certainly use the amazing imaginative world of Narnia as inspiration sometimes. I recently created some little Tumnus horns which are fun and quite lovely. Also, my jewellers stamp is Reepicheep, the mouse with the rapier.” Luci has some unique pieces available to buy immediately and can be contacted

for worldwide commissions. F
