futuristic low energy house The final chapter
Deep in the beautiful countryside of West Sussex, up a quiet lane sits the crescent house. Constructed on the site of an old barn, this mil- lion pound home, from its unobtrusive exterior, does not give a clue to the extent of this dra- matic build. The family has now moved into this striking
new self build. Architect Jo Saady, managing director of Ecotecture, has created this home fol- lowing the owners brief to the letter. A dream come true, this five-bedroomed, split
level house with minimalist appeal, has been completed to a very high standard and the cleanlines of this remarkable build blends seam- lessly with its environment. Light floods into the property at every oppor-
tunity through the Optwin windows, which are faceted following the curvature of the building. When walking through this development, the full effect of these windows can be appreciated,
especially in the master bedroom. The master bedroom follows through with
open plan living – the beautifully ergonomic bath placed in a prominent place within the room setting, backed with a stunning wet room. The children’s bedrooms and the office have
glass walls, making full use of the light and the views to the surrounding garden and country- side. At the moment the builder is awaiting the delivery of the brise soleil, which will bring the temperature down within the build. “On a pre- vious visit to the house the temperature inside was 29°C, the installation of the solar shading will stop the building from overheating,” advises Jo Saady.
Downstairs the living area does not disap-
point. The polished concrete flooring reflects the light streaming through the windows, giving the open plan living area a feeling of space. At one end of this large living area sits the high tech kitchen, the white units are built into an L shape with a large island, following the owners desire to create a minimal look. One of the most important rooms on the lower
level is the plant room, the heart of this eco home, containing the HVAC, solar power, hot water stor- age tank and backup boiler. With the heating technology and high level of insulation used within this build, the heating bills will be minimal. A Nuvo Audio System has been provided by
multi room audio installation company, Lime Green. The company ensured that the high qual- ity components supplied kept the visual impact of the equipment to a minimum, while at the
same time being sensitive to the décor and feel of the property.
The reasons for choosing this system: • Full access to all tracks stored on any iPod that is connected to the system.
• Adding new albums to the system is done when new tracks are added onto your iPod.
• The system has the ability to playback sound at the same quality as the original CD.
• Allowing choice from one of six sources in each zone or link zones together to play the same piece of music.
• Water resistant wall touchscreen keypads for control over sources/zones.
• Has no visible boxes or hardware on show, all hardware can be hidden in the central hub.
• Gives unparalleled and intuitive control over your music collection. The keypads will allow you to search by album, artist and song title.
This installation also includes the ability to con-
nect up to six source devices (iPods, CD player, Radio etc) to the system. Freeview access and the ability to view/control the central Sky HD box is based in the home cinema. The bedrooms will initially be able to view the boxes signal in standard definition, however, these rooms have been prewired with the capability for HD distri- bution to future-proof the property. Once the landscaping and final snagging list
have been completed, the family will have an amazing home, designed by a team who have pushed the clients’ expectations to the limit.
