f you are able to not get caught up in the stress and instead enjoy the beauty and emotion of this magical time of year, the Christmas holi-


day season is the best of them all. As a child, I was defi nitely focused on what I was get ing for Christmas, but as an adult, I am in love with giving. To give of one’s self is a beautiful thing. T e other day I saw an old friend, and she told me all three of her


sons had joined the military. T ese boys are good looking, bright, funny and can be successful at anything in life they want. T e choice all three made was to volunteer to protect our great country. Two of them are deployed to Afghanistan right now, one fl ying Apache helicopters on the most dangerous of missions, and another already has a Purple Heart as a result of his truck being blown up by a road- side bomb. T e third son is in his fi nal weeks of jump school in the Air Force, and I have no doubt he wants to join his brothers. To hear their mother speak with such pride in what they are doing,


sharing how much they want to be doing exactly what they are doing, it struck me how brave she must be to have her three guys so far away from home. And it hit me that these brave young men, as all the men and women of our military, were so eager to join because of their great love for our country. Our military men and women will spend their Christmas in the far reaches of our world, away from their family. T ere will be an

empty chair at the Christmas tree back home as their family members remember and pray for their safety. T ey made a choice, and they are making the sacrifi ce. Jesus said there is no greater giſt a person can give than to lay down his life for a friend. T is Christmas, when we are all snuggled


up around the Christmas tree with our families, enjoying fellowship and opening our giſt s, remember there is a giſt there that may not be wrapped in paper but is truly the greatest giſt you can receive—the giſt of US military men and women willing to lay down their lives for your freedom. May God bless you, and may you have a beautiful Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ!
