CAMPING AND RIDING IN WINTER CONDITIONS TAKES PLANNING, PREPARATION—AND A PENCHANT FOR ADVENTURE


ecently I spent nearly two weeks camping with my horse Pro Bono, aka “Bo,” on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. We completed a 5-day, 250-mile endurance ride and also helped with some of the trail work leading up to the


ride. It was enough work to take care of myself and a horse for the endurance ride; it became even more of a challenge when a major cold front moved in, leaving in its wake heavy rains fol- lowed by several inches of snow and subfreezing temperatures. We were camped at over 8,000 feet elevation in a nice


meadow surrounded by tall pines and aspen trees with leaves in all shades of green to yellow and orange. It was a beauti- ful set ing that changed quickly from sunny and warm to wet, cold and then suddenly covered in snow and 12 degrees! Read on to learn some of the things I did to take care of


myself as well as my horse Bo. I’ll share my tips for plan- ning ahead so that I was prepared to deal with the chang- ing weather conditions and chilly temperatures.
