edEx Express has opened a new 20,000sq ſt facility Kilroot
Business Park in
Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland. The express carrier is also investing in a domestic ground delivery service within Ulster and a FedEx global service based on a daily Embraer 120 flight to Paris from Belfast International, about 20 miles away. This will feed into the company’s international hubs and accelerate delivery times to many parts of the globe, notably North America and Asia. A next-
business-day service will operate to and from Europe and the US East Coast, with a two-business- day service to Asia and the rest of the US. (Exact services may vary depending on place of collection and delivery, with cut off times in some of the more remote parts of Ulster a couple of hours earlier than elsewhere). The new centre was officially
opened on 8 November by Northern Ireland Assembly Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Arlene Foster, who said: “The availability of logistics companies such as FedEx is important for businesses seeking to win and having to service sales outside Northern
Ireland. The
presence of an internationally renowned company such as FedEx will add to our inward investment proposition and increase Northern Ireland’s attractiveness to potential investors.”

Move puts Yusen in a new league in Leeds
Y
usen Logistics (UK), the NYK Group’s forwarding arm, has
moved its Leeds operation from Castleford to a new operation in Stourton, south east of the city. The new facility is an integral part of
Yusen Logistics’ high-security network and operates as a cross-dock platform and storage facility. It will play a key strategic role as an inland import centre, says the forwarder. Situated next to
rail routes, as well as the M1, M621 and M62 motorways, the new site will help Yusen Logistics take freight off the roads. Managing director, Yusen Logistics (UK), Ian Veitch, commented: “We are extremely excited by this move. The location provides a better suited facility to service customers and underlines our commitment to continued provision of a North Yorkshire network platform.”
Russia to join WTO R
ussia is expected to join the World Trade Organisation by
the end of the year, after a deal was brokered with
its regional rival,
Georgia on 3 November. Securing the latter country’s agreement was the final barrier to Russia’s admission to the WTO. Disagreement between the
two countries dates back
to the 2008 war when Russia recognised the independence of
the Georgian regions of South
Ossetia and Abkhazia, and the simmering dispute had threatened to derail plans for Russia to finalise its accession by the end of the year. However, under a Swiss-
mediated deal an independent company will monitor traffic at both

regions’ borders and will also act as a mediator between Georgian and Russian customs, although Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili said that he ultimately wanted Georgian customs officers to be allowed to work alongside the international observers. Russia’s negotiations to join the
organisation date back nearly two decades and it is currently the only G20 country that is not also a WTO member. It is also the largest non- WTO economy. WTO members are expected
to hold a formal vote on Russia’s accession at the WTO’s eighth ministerial council on 15-17 December.

Think smart. Think Redhead. President, FedEx Express Europe,
Gerald Leary, added that delivery times to the US West Coast or to Asia, could be cut by a full business day. Michael Holt, chief executive
officer FedEx UK said that, previously, Fedex had had a domestic service and a partnership arrangement to provide Northern Ireland with an international link.
With the opening of the new depot however, Fedex now had a wholly- owned operation with its own flights direct to the main European hub in Paris, as well as 35 vans based at the new depot. “Previously, we were partnering
for our delivery fleets, but this is our first wholly-owned fleet in Northern Ireland in recent history,” said

Fedex opens up Ulster to the world F
Michael Holt, adding: “I would like to think that we now have one of the best operations in Northern Ireland of any of the integrators.” Fedex operates line haul
vehicles itself to Cairnryan, where a partner takes over. Domestic UK services are provided by road, via P&O’s Cairnryan-Larne service and Carrickfergus’s closeness to
Larne harbour was a key factor in selecting the location. Fedex has taken over an existing warehouse but has had a new office block added. While it is early days in Northern Ireland, Michael Holt says
the
region has bright prospects: “We wanted to put investment into an area that has growth potential.”
