All systems go for Freja

N

ordic international freight specialist Freja Transport

and Logistics has invested in a new fleet management system which, following initial implementation over the summer, is now being fully integrated across all the company’s operations. Although it is early days yet, the new system will bring major efficiency and customer service benefits, says Jesper Petersen, CEO of Freja Transport and Logistics. He explains: “One advantage of the system is that our trailers are better filled up. We’re going to run far fewer miles of half-empty trailers.” Management will be able to

see all trucks operating across the 13 different branches in Europe through the satellite-based tracking system, which should give many more possibilities to optimise space, he believes. But, Petersen adds, “it also gives

as big advantages in being able to offer proactive customer service, to follow customers’ shipments and, if there should be delays due to technical problems, inform them in advance. There have already been many cases where we’ve been able to intervene pro- actively and it has also saved a lot of manual intervention.” The system has been

developed to Freja’s own specification by German-based telematics company, Cargobull, along with Danish satellite tracking specialist Gatehouse and EG, a large soſtware house that also does a lot of work for the Danish Ministry of Transport. Cargobull Telematics CEO

Karl-Heinz Neu adds: “We have for years participated in many projects Europe-wide, but this is the most customer-oriented, professional and best organized development project we’ve ever been involved with.” Freja’s business meanwhile

is holding up reasonably well despite the continued Euro crisis, says Petersen. “Yes, at the moment everyone seems to have one foot on the accelerator, the other on the brake, due mainly to the problems in southern Europe, but business is very acceptable at the moment. The first half of 2011 was quite good and while the second half has not been as strong as we once hoped it would be, it’s still very good, especially compared with 2008 or 2009.”

As well as offering full-,

part-load and groupage trailer transport between the Nordic countries and most parts of Europe – many of them daily - and international air and sea forwarding, Freja also has some niche businesses such as third party logistics work in Norway for the pharmaceutical industry and project

– including outsize loads – in Finland.

schudi Logistics - the agent for Tschudi Lines North Sea – is

reporting quite brisk business on its routes between Scandinavia and the UK, following the introduction of a larger, 750teu containership in May. The Pachuca operates the North Sea Line route weekly from Immingham via Rotterdam to the three Oslo Fjord ports of Drammen (for Oslo city itself), Larvik and Moss, departing the UK on Thursday and arriving in Drammen on Monday morning. The

return service operates via Esbjerg, tapping into the larger Denmark-UK market, as Norway doesn’t export a great deal of containerisable goods. A feeder service via Rotterdam is also available from Belfast, Dublin and Cork. Tschudi Logistics managing

director Andy Ellis says: “UK exports to Norway are strong at the moment and we’re increasing our market share.” Container operators like Tschudi Logistics have an

advantage in an imbalanced trade like UK to Norway, he reckons, because they can position empty boxes back to Denmark for reloads much more cost-effectively than can the road trailer hauliers. Use of containers into Norway also opens up the rail option from Drammen to other parts of Norway, which is a fast way of positioning traffic direct to destination in Norway. Tschudi Logistics

the 45’, palletwide types, which are essential when competing with trailer operators, says Andy Ellis . “In fact, we hardly have any standard type boxes in our fleet now,” he comments. The Scandinavian market has

held up remarkably well in the recession, he adds, as has Tschudi’s other markets in Russia and the CIS countries. Tschudi operates a large number of other sea and rail services in the Baltic regions.

curtainsiders, reefers, coil carriers and a special design of trailer than can double as an ordinary curtainsider or, with the curtains removed, be used as a flatbed for cargoes such as steel coil. Freja uses the ‘Gigaliner’

25.75m long combinations that are allowed in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and, to a lesser extent, Norway but these of course are not allowed to run south of Denmark into Germany. The company also does a

fair amount of business to and from the UK through its partners Hellmann and Rhenus. Freja had been on the

acquisition trail in the past four years, but this process is now basically complete, says Petersen. “If there were smaller opportunities that were easy to implement and where we could see synergy, I wouldn’t say no, but we are not now looking for anything major.” All the acquisitions have been in Freja’s own Nordic region – the company now has ambitions to set up a pan-European operation. “We consider ourselves a specialist in our own region,” Petersen concludes.
