WELLBEING IN THE WORK PLACE


Stress clearly is a major issue and coping with it, (or not as the case may be) badly needs to be addressed as it is escalating and without positive, concentrated action it is predicted to continue to escalate.


The past couple of years have seen challenges in many businesses in having to make tough decisions that have impacted on their workforce. Employees have been working harder to boost productivity and meet business objectives. Many companies have had fewer resources, and people have had increased responsibility and workloads due to cutbacks, layoffs and restructuring approaches.


In my last article ‘The Importance of Skilled Managers’ I wrote about the effects of stress on the immune system and how much illness has its roots in the body, mind and emotions being stressed – some 85%-90%. This is because the stress hormone, Cortisol that is released when we are feeling any kind of stress results directly in the chronic increase in Cortisol. This leads to suppression of the immune system making it work less effectively.


In the Top Tips For Leadership & Management that I shared in the last edition, all of those actions contribute significantly to relieve what can cause stress for individuals at work, fear, uncertainly, change, upset, worry, anxiety and therefore positively impact on a person’s immune system and health.


This is the fourth article in my series and one that is closest to my heart. For over 35 years having been involved as a carer for a family member for who suffered the consequences of what I recognise now as probably untreated early warning signs of stress, anxiety and depression leading into a more complex psychotic mental health issue – trust me you would do anything to avoid that happening.


I speak from first-hand experience which is why I deliver what I hope is a powerful message to you about building resilience and reducing stress and having more happiness in our lives to impact on our overall wellbeing.

However how can we expect leaders & managers to do a good job in supporting others if they are feeling stressed themselves? CMI (Chartered Management Institute) research indicated that 53% of managers say they feel overloaded with work; 1 in 5 employees say their bosses create stressful environments; although 45% of managers consider themselves good role models, 45% admit to being stressed at work themselves.


One of my Top Tips is about recognising stress and when does the positive ‘up for a challenge’ pressure situation become stress and what are the signs that leaders and managers should look out for?


Having recently completed training in Mental Health First Aid & Emotional Resilience in the Work Place I can recommend it for organisations that want to ensure their people can be informed about this specific area and can deal with situations appropriately and confidently should they arise.
