Girls inspired to pursue science and engineering careers

In July, the University of Sheffi eld hosted a science and engineering day with over 90 local school girls from across South Yorkshire taking part. The girls participated in a skeleton bobsleigh challenge, where they were asked to design their own bobsleighs and then raced in a simulator to see how eff ective their designs were. Other activities included making model planes out of balsa wood in a workshop with current aerospace engineering students, and a session with the University of Sheffi eld’s Biomedical Science, where pupils formed a human digestive tract! A careers session was also held where pupils learned about the diff erent routes into STEM professions, particularly focusing on promoting more female participation in these subjects.

A record 125 teams from 34 diff erent countries built cars to compete at Formula Student 2011, which was held at Silverstone in Northamptonshire in July. Run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Formula Student challenged universities from across the world to design, build and race a single-seater racing car in one year. The cars were then judged on their speed, acceleration and endurance, while the teams were tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills. The University of Stuttgart won the competition while the University of Hertfordshire was the top 10 UK entrant, placing third.
