Lovely as ever in Mona Lisa Smile
Then came the peak years of her Hol- lywood career. The next six were as fruitful as the previous six had been fallow. The turning point wasMy Best Friend’s Wedding, which audiences all over the world loved. It was another romantic, feel-good come- dy and a huge hit at the box office. Sesame Street followed, then Runa-
way Bride, Notting Hill and then she got her first Academy Award for Best Actress in Erin Brockovich in 2001. Two years later she was paid $25 mil-
lion to makeMona Lisa Smile, which was the highest salary ever paid to an actress in Hollywood. Rumour has it that director Stephen Soderbergh also paid her $25 million, when he made Ocean’s Twelve. She made nothing of any great merit
for four years after that, but Julia’s now on her way back to the top. Last year’s Eat Pray Love made a fortune; and, to top the year off, Lancome signed her up to a five year contract for an incredi- ble $50 million.
Come March we can see Julia playing the Evil
Queen inMirror Mirror, a film remake of Snow White; and at the end of 2012, catch her in August: Osage County, starring oppositeMeryl Streep. At the age of 44, Julia – known as Jules to her
friends – is happily married to cameraman Danny Moder, has three children and ready to start her third film life. She has no money problems, so can pick and
chose from the films offered to her. La dame rumour says she’s worth $140 million, and that doesn’t include her contracts with beauty hous- es. She formed her own production company, Shoelace, which was responsible forMona Lisa Smile. Julia looks as lovely as ever. That strong, large face, with the smiling mouth and wide-open eyes, hasn’t changed. But she never had any il-
lusions about herself. She comes from Georgia, and wanted to be a vet, until the family broke up, and went to New York instead to learn to act. Her teachers weren’t certain what roles would
best suit her, and she understand that. ‘I’m too tall,’ she said. ‘I don’t really know what I am. Somewhere between a chick and broad.’ In her search to find what she is today, she
practises Hinduism, and travels the world for UNICEF. I have the feeling that Julia will make a strik-
ingly beautiful woman in her mid-career films. She’s always had the looks and charm, but now has a deeper acting ability. She may never be- come anotherMeryl Streep, but she has more chance of doing that than any other star of her generation currently making films in Hollywood.
