Julia Roberts: luminous in Eat Pray Love
Julia Roberts is one of Hollywood’s most luminous stars. For six or seven years she was the hottest name in films, and everything she did made big bucks. In Hollywood your success is based on how much dosh your films rake in, and Julia’s films were so popular that her name is at the top of that list. It all started 23 years ago, with the teen film
Mystic Pizza. It introduced two new names to movie audiences, Julia Roberts andMatt Damon. Producers noted their performances, and Julia got a supporting role in Steel Magnolias. This brought her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and first Golden Globe.
More importantly, it brought her the part of
the hooker in the Pygmalion story of Pretty Woman, with Richard Gere. She got the role after Meg Ryan, Daryl Hannah andMichelle Pfeiffer had turned it down, and did it for £300,000. She was so memorable in the film that it
got her another Oscar and Golden Globe nomination, but strangely this success led nowhere.
The next six years she made a film a year, but none to remember, and she foolishly turned down the role of Annie in Sleepless in
Seattle, which went toMeg Ryan.
