24 Local advice from national firm
Haines Watts are specialist accountants to owner-managed businesses and represent over 35,000 clients in the UK. Its offices are run by partners who are business owners themselves, so are well placed to give relevant advice and offer solutions to daily problems. Haines Watts don't just understand the numbers but all the other challenges that arise when running a business too
Being part of a national accountancy firm puts Haines Watts in the Thames Valley in a unique position. Haines Watts is a top 15 firm of Chartered Accountants, so its local offices can offer a full range of national and international services; yet because its staff are local people, they can provide unrivalled knowledge of the area and personal attention to detail.
Being more accessible helps Haines Watts to build successful, lasting relationships with its clients, who see it as part of their team rather than simply their accountants. Haines Watts are pleased to introduce some of its partners in the Thames Valley, who share here some of their observations on the local economy and marketplace in their areas.
Barry Potter - Farnborough, Basingstoke and Alton offices
The Surrey-Hampshire region continues to be relatively resilient to the global turmoil. Owners are carefully managing their cashflow and are doing their best to look after their employees, even though some companies have had pay freezes or a reduction in pay, and have stopped recruiting.
Many clients are developing new services and entering other markets because their traditional clientele, which has often included local authorities, are reducing their spend due to budget cut backs.
Particularly useful at the moment is the fact that we have a large technical tax team and, by taking an overall look at our clients’ affairs, we are able to offer innovative advice to help them mitigate their tax liabilities. We are on hand at all times to provide assistance on all manner of business issues.
Simon Garrett - Oxford office
The marketplace in Oxfordshire seems to have held up relatively

well during these troubled times compared to many regions of the UK. This might be partly due to the fact that the region is not heavily dependent on the public sector or on manufacturing. Our client base has fared well in general terms, often because it was careful to build up strength during the better times.
HW is particularly experienced in tax planning for companies, individuals and families. In addition it has numerous international clients and frequently makes use of the group’s worldwide international network, both in terms of tax planning and compliance, as well as providing accounting/auditing resource. The firm works with a wide range of clients.
John Bailey - Reading office
The businesses we work with are reasonably stable and there hasn’t been any real change in our region during the past year. Some of our clients in factoring and security are having their best years ever, whilst others are experiencing lower corporate profits than previously. Funding to support and help businesses expand still appears to be a problem.
Everyone continues to look for cost savings and many clients are working closely with our expense control section. Clients are also looking for other forms of funding than bank finance and are finding HW Corporate Finance and HW Asset Finance helpful in this respect. Our payroll services are always in demand.
Colin Fletcher - High Wycombe office
Business in the area continues to be challenged by the difficult economic climate, although those operating in niche areas or with developed export markets appear to be faring better than most. Many small businesses are
frustrated by the lack of credit being provided by the banks, especially to support growth.
HW Outsourced Services has been of particular benefit to those who want more time to focus on managing and growing their business. We offer a dedicated outsourced accounting service, which can include all data entry, preparation of management reports and accounts, cashflow planning, credit control, VAT returns and payroll, together with support and advice to the business owner. This helps businesses to strengthen their financial management whilst giving owners time to concentrate on the rest.
Jane Wills - Slough office
The economy in Slough is very patchy. We have clients who are still able to operate successfully, whilst others are finding things tougher now than they were three years ago. Credit and business funding continue to be a problem and there are signs that exports to Europe are suffering as well after a strong summer. Nevertheless, there are some notable success stories and it is encouraging how ingenious and enterprising the SME market continues to be.
HW offers a full range of compliance work, as well as having access to specialists in VAT, HR and tax (including international tax) to assist clients. We can also assist when accounting information or procedures are no longer coping with the current level of activities.
As it says on the Haines Watts website – wherever you want to be with your business we will make it our responsibility to help you get there. Not only do we go the extra mile but also beyond, to ensure your time and hard work are rewarded.
