Veterinarian Dr. Mary Alice Brown died at her home on November 4 at the age of 73. Born in New York City, Brown attended the Brear- ley School and later Smith College. She also earned a Masters degree from the University of Virginia. Brown taught at the Garrison Forest School before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medi- cine. Brown was also a respected and successful breeder of competition horses. One such horse, Frolicsome, who was ridden by Mike Plumb, was short-listed for the 1972 U.S. Olympic T ree-Day Event team. T e Frolicsome Award was donated by Brown and is annually presented to the USEA Mare of the Year. Such eventers as Mike Plumb, Bruce and Buck Davidson and

Chappell died on November 2 at the age of 86. Chappell was the daughter of an a-rabber and homemaker. She was a graduate of the old Fred- erick Douglass High School and Cortex Peters Business School. Chappell was a T oroughbred racehorse fan who sponsored an annual dinner at Pimlico Race Course that honored African- American jockeys and trainers. Kathleen H. Riggs died on August 5 at the age of 60. Riggs was an assistant trainer to Talbot Albert III and often ran his Pimlico Race Course stable. In 2003, Riggs was honored by the Mary- land T oroughbred Horseman’s Association as being Pimlico’s Outstanding Backstretch Per- former. Riggs took a position at the Maryland Racing Commission test barn in 2008. T oroughbred trainer Earl Begley, Jr. of Baltimore died on August 11 at the age of 55. He was based primarily at Pimlico


starting in 1983. Horses trained by Begley totaled 485 victories and earned just over $5 million. Notable stakes winners include Band Performance, Love Sam and Unbri- dled Behavior.
