Howard County horsewom- an and treasurer of the Mary- land Western Horse Associa- tion, Ellen V. Schultz died on October 31 at the age of 95. She was a founding mem- ber of MWHA and was also involved with the League of Maryland Horsemen and a group of young riders called T e Vaqueros from 1955- 1977. Ellen was an active and dedicated civic activist, serving on the Mary- land Council on Education, the First District Democratic Club, Howard County Demo- cratic Central Committee, United Democratic Clubs of Howard County, Howard County Board of Library Trustees, Elkridge Master Plan Committee, Elkridge Community As- sociation, Elkridge Heritage Society and the

Howard County Police Department Crime Advisory Board.
Ellen and her daughter Peggy (of
Woodbine) were partners with Dr. Clarence Miller of Baltimore in the small but active racing stable, Socorro, Inc. Ellen’s son, Harold, is a T oroughbred trainer based in Ocala, Florida. Peggy notes that her mother was “equally comfort- able testifying before the County Council, correcting homework or judging horse shows.” About fi ve years ago, the MWHA established the Schultz-Spedden
Scholarship for graduating seniors with good GPAs and community service, who have excelled in the equestrian world and who have been ac- cepted to college. All the proceeds from that year’s youth show are presented to the scholar to help defray the fi rst year of tuition. T e scholar- ships usually average about $1,500-$2,000. George William Webster was born to Jennifer Sponseller Webster and Chauncey Webster on November 23.
wrote, “Ellen was passionate about everything she did in life. She was meticulous, caring, or- ganized, a hard worker, wanted things to be done correctly, and did not mind voicing her opinion if she thought she was right. She was truly a remarkable person. Ellen had an admi- rable zest for life until the very end. It did not matter if it was education, horses, politics, fam- ily, friends, or driving her car. She was a very special person who touched many lives and will be truly missed by a lot of people. “ In 2009, the MWHA current president Sam Kern wrote and presented a poem to Ellen that concludes: “I’m proud to be president of a club she created. It’s more than an honor, I’m absolutely elated.”
