Landscaper Provides Hope for Man Teetering on Homelessness

ROHNERT PARK, CA – It looked as though this Thanksgiving would be

a

bleak one for Phillip Hessel. Unemployed, without a phone or electricity, and only a bike for transportation, the possibility of land- ing a job seemed remote. The threat of

homelessness loomed. Although he is experienced in all manner of labor, his search for work wasn’t producing any viable prospects. Enter David Lee, owner of DK Landscaping. After hearing about Hessel from a woman at his church, David met with the man and found him capable and eager to work. With a landscaping project scheduled for the weekend, David put Phillip to work for two days with his crew. He picked Phillip up in Windsor, drove him to the job site, provided breakfast and lunch, paid him a living wage, and took him home at night. Why

did he go to all this trouble? “As a child in Hong Kong, I lived in poverty,” says Lee. “My fam- ily of seven lived in one room. When we came to the U.S., we lived in East Palo Alto, then the murder capital of the country. I’m very thankful that I have a successful business, and I take nothing for granted. This is my way of sharing what I have.” At the end of

the

weekend, DK Landscaping employees, including Hessel, received a turkey. Lee also gave Hessel a sleeping bag to keep him warm on cold winter nights. David Mun Lee is president of DK Landscaping, a Rohnert Park-based company that pro- vides maintenance, cleanup and irrigation services. The business, founded 10 years ago, is QWEL (Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper) and WaterSense certified. This Thanksgiving, DK Landscaping is distributing 20 turkeys to those in need.

Massachusetts was the first American colony to issue paper money.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing became the sole producer of United States currency in 1877.

The U.S. Mint became a part of the Department of Treasury in 1873.

The Secret Service was created to suppress counterfeit currency in 1865. Incidentally, they didn't begin protection services for the First Family until 1894.

Money is defined as "legal tender" in the U.S. Legal tender may be used to satisfy public charges, taxes, dues, and debts. The law, however, does not require anyone to accept currency as legal tender.

U.S. currency is green for three reasons: the ink was available in large quantities when printing currency began, it is resistant to chemical change, and it is the color the U.S. public now identifies with money.

Paper currency has an average lifespan of 18 months.

ANOTHER LETTER

Hi Paul, I just received your November 2011 issue in the mail and was surprised to see the pic- ture on page 2, which we are led to believe was you several years ago. Truth be known, if I were to send you a picture of me from the same era, you would also be amazed. Time does march on! We enjoy reading the UPBEAT TIMES every month here in Idaho. Thanks for the subscription services. It is a great joy to have watched the paper come back in such a grand way.

It

just keeps getting bigger and more exciting every month. Keep up the good work, my friend, and I will contact you next time I am in town for a quick get-together.
