ow and then it is
important to look back and get a clear perspective of where you've been and
where you are now. I look back with a bit of wonder and think to myself..'I don't remember that'. There are however points in life that are as clear as yesterday, or five minutes ago for that matter. I ran the photo of myself from back in 1993-1994 and got quite a few comments about the difference. It has prompted con- versations that are quite fun. The people I have spoken to have compared the battle wounds of life and it is at times quite hilar- ious. In November's issue the Verbal Commute title was 'Then & Now'. But 'Now & Then' takes on a whole new meaning, for example; Now and then you have to take a break and get some rest! So that is what I am doing
a bit more every year. A real human being cannot maintain a vigorous work routine day after day. So, I decided, since it was my 48th birthday that I would go and stay at the ocean for a week. Doing absolutely nothing, which is, frankly, very difficult for me to do. I don't know why really. I believe I was born that way sincerely. I spoke with my mom who lives up in the Clearlake area and the topic came up about my endless energy stream and hyperactive approach toward life. I mentioned that it has been misinterpreted by people I've met throughout my life. At times people even asked me if I was on drugs and it made me laugh. I reassured them that life is already challenging enough just being straight. I told my mom about this and she said, 'Just have them call me honey, and I'll fill them in, don't you worry!'

mother had her hands full for sure. Having two children as I do is definitely a challenge, but five? Non-the-less, my mother obviously loved all of us. All five of us today are quite ener- getic and at many points a bit high-strung. That is why the job of publishing this paper may be the perfect career choice. I travel around the county from business to business dropping off papers, negotiating marketing opportu- nities for them to promote their

'Upbeat' busi- nesses. I meet with people that have great sto- ries to tell and that
want to
share them with our upbeat read- ers, and I do it with enthusi- asm!

to. I went to a small
in Forestville while
business deliver-
ing my paper and ran into the publisher of the local Sonoma County paper called the Bohemian, except I did not know it was her.
I had only met her maybe one time in the last six or seven years and a group of people were ask- ing me while I was delivering, 'What paper is that? I've not read that
before!' I went into what
most people would call a 'sales pitch' about what the Upbeat Times was about and what we do, focusing on the positive side of life and how I am trying to promote what is working in our towns and cities in order to stim- ulate the economy, and that we are growing alot becuase of our message. I mentioned also that we publish good news instead of the tragedy, sensationalism and
trauma...and she started to laugh. She says, "Paul, it's Rosemary, publisher the Bohemian! I was just kidding you". And, she got me. I did not remember her face from our brief meetings in the past. And, in my enthusiastic mode of delivery(I personally deliver 512 locations out of over 750 in two to three days), I was caught off guard for sure. But, the way I look at it, it was fine! I laughed along with her, because it was funny! She got to see another publisher in action and the real side of who I am and now knows what I say to anyone who asks me about who we are. After all, I am very proud of my accomplishments and that I have a created a paper that is now in great demand!
I am truly the 'Upbeat Guy'.
People even say that to me, and that it completely fits me. I reas-

sure them that my enthusi- asm is genu- ine, and that it is still growing 'til this day. I have to be a self starter for sure. The great part of some- one getting me/catching me off- guard is the fact that it makes life so much more enjoyable. I am personally reminded that I am doing the best possible job I can out there and not to take myself to seriously. I am motivated by the one or two people who's lives I may personally impact in a positive way. I am not trying to be someone I am not, I am truly who I am, and that is very positive.
When I got away for the week
at the ocean, I was busy once again, in a nice way. My focus was now all about the sound of the waves. Making coffee in the morning. Eating, cleaning and thinking about the next meal. My family joined me later in the week to celebrate another birthday(November 10) and it was awesome! Although I did not hold still much of the time, I did however have time to think about how to make the Upbeat Times even more enjoyable for all the readers out there! I look forward putting out a improved paper for you in 2012! Until then, may this paper find you well, upbeat and energized.
