A Unique Gift for the Holidays L
ooking for a unique gift to give friends and family for the holidays?
Many people write their memoirs and self-publish them to give as gifts. Everyone has a unique life experience, a unique perspective, and a unique style of writing. This makes a truly unique gift that your friends and family will enjoy for years to come. What is a memoir? It’s a type of autobiography involving a portion of the author’s life (the
author’s sonal knowledge) as
experiences/per- it
relates
to a person, historic event, or thing. It is not as detailed as an autobiography, which covers the author’s entire life to the pres- ent. Examples of memoirs I’ve worked on recently include the antics of five brothers growing up together in the ’40s, a man’s near-death experience, a man’s quest to beat his diabetes, and a woman’s spiritual journey after the death of her daughter. Memoirs can be formal, casual, long, short, inspirational, even sad. People write memoirs for many reasons, including preserv- ing or recording family history, sharing information and wisdom,

and to help other people. Author Michelle Brown’s memoir This Girl’s Life — Being the Child of a War Veteran (Barnes & Noble. com) is very disturbing and dark at times, but writing it was a healing process for her, forcing her to confront and work through childhood abuse issues. She also hopes the book will help others who may be in abusive situations. Photographs are a nice touch
in any memoir. Often we include them inside the book, and also incorporate them into the cover design. If you have only old photographs, still consider using them. They often reproduce quite well, and if they’re a bit discol- ored or spotted, this adds a touch of charm to the book.
What do you need to do? Plan ahead! Have your book ready for press submission at least by November. Write, review, polish. Have your text checked for errors (by an editor, members of a writ- ing group, a critiquing partner, or a friend). Have your book for- matted/typeset for submission, and decide how you want to pro- duce the book. Self-publishing presses like InstantPublisher. com, 48-Hour Books (and many
