Working to End Domestic Violence in Our Community


For over 32 years, the Shelter for Help in Emergency has been the sole agency providing comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence in the city of Charlottesville, and the surrounding counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson. In addition to emergency shelter, the Shelter offers: 24- hour crisis hotline, case management and advocacy, crisis intervention, legal advocacy, supportive counseling, children’s programs, services to the Spanish-speaking community, information and referrals, and education and volunteer programs.

Since 1954 The Arc has been the leading voice in Central Virginia for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our mission is to improve the quality of life of infants, children and adults with or at risk of intellectual and developmental disabilities, and the lives of their families, through service, advocacy and education. Through a continuum of prevention, residential and day support services, and Advocacy and Education, The Arc works to ensure every person with a developmental disability has access to the supports and resources necessary to live a quality of life we all strive to achieve.

The Oratorio Society of Virginia - with a professional sound and the spirit of a community chorus - has a tradition of exciting choral music for audiences of all ages. Interim Music Director Michael Slon starts off this season with the annual festive holiday concert; two more concerts follow in the spring.

The mission of The Paramount Theater of Charlottesville, Inc., is to operate the restored and adapted historic Paramount Theater, located in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia, for the artistic, educational, and charitable benefit of its community, including the city of Charlottesville, Albemarle and surrounding counties, and the entire Central Virginia region.


VFH connects people and ideas to enrich the human experience and inspire cultural engagement. VFH encourages discovery and connection through the humanities by supporting and producing programs for wide public audiences. Working with communities to explore the past, confront issues of the present, and discover a promising future, projects focus in three areas: Community Programs, Scholarship, and Digital Initiatives.


Projects include Encyclopedia Virginia; Virginia Festival of the Book; With Good Reason and BackStory radio shows; fellowships; grants; and Folklife, African American, and Virginia Indian programs.
