MASTER PHOTOGRAPHY 4

My first duty as President of the MPA is to thank the previous holder of this post, Henk van Kooten (handing over to me, above). I’ve worked with Henk many times over the last few years and it’s hard to think of anyone else who is as passionate about photography. I know that in his year as President he inspired a huge number of photographers to push themselves further than they ever have be- fore. If I can be even half as effective as Henk I will be very happy! For those of you who don’t know me, here’s a quick summary: I work with my wife Kate (also a photographer and MPA member) from our home based studio in York. We’ve been in business for sixteen years and class ourselves as GP photographers. Our business split is almost exactly 50/50 social and commercial, so I’ve got a reasonable feel for what is happening in most market areas. It would be great to say that everything is rosy in the world of photography and that business is booming for everybody... but the reality is somewhat different. Times are tough. The days of waiting for the phone to ring are long gone, and it’s up to us, as Profes- sional Photographers, to get out there and make it happen. In our own business, Kate and I are working harder on marketing than we ever have had to before. The work is out there but it takes a little bit more than a fancy website to secure it. Which brings me to the MPA. One of the most important tools in our marketing armoury is our MPA membership. It’s easy to dismiss it – ‘because the public don’t know what it means’ – but that’s only if nobody has told them yet. A national advertising campaign is out- side the scope of the MPA budget, but as individual members we can certainly help to get the message out there and win extra business for ourselves in the process. Surely that’s a win/win situation? I hope that over the next twelve months I’ll get to meet as many members as possible, and engage in some positive discussion about how we can move our profession forward.

Think back to when you submitted your Licentiate panel. Terrify- ing wasn’t it? But didn’t it make you a better photographer? You had to learn about lighting, composition, posing and print quality. All the things that define the difference between a professional photogra- pher and someone who’s just picked up a camera for the first time. I’m in no doubt that 2012 will bring a new influx of photographers who have left (or been pushed from) other careers. We need to dif- ferentiate ourselves by going back to basics and promoting all the things that we learnt when we first joined the MPA. At the same time we also need to recognise the emerging talent within the newcomers, and encourage them to take the steps that we did to become Qualified Master Photographers.

Continuous development is the key to success in any profession, and photography is no exception. – Paul Cooper FMPA, President
