The new Pixma desktop A3+ printer with 12 inks promises to exceed the gamut of any printer at this price, great for proofing.

You can tell that this is where Canon has really focused their efforts. As I’m a non-Canon user, Guido takes some delight in telling me that yes, I can even have a split-image/micro- prism focusing screen without losing the grid function. But when Canon’s lack of a true second-curtain sync is raised, I learn that the 1D X still lacks this feature.

The emphasis on giving the 1D userbase the performance they’ve come to expect in particular working environments leads to two other features – an ethernet port on the body, which allows for incredibly fast tethered operation over long distances, and the new wireless solution. Likely to cost around £500 when released, this is powered by the camera and is impressively tiny – roughly the size of a squat USB memory stick.

Sticking to a lower resolution than their previous, even con-

sumer models, is a bold move for Canon as all indications suggest Nikon and Sony will be increasing their pixel counts. It may well prove to be the right one. Certainly first impressions of the 1D X are very promising. Canon’s full range of large format printers was also on display, with a certain amount of pomotion for the “Big Print Plan” – a pay-per-click style pricing structure for leasing and ink supplies – and their most recent Pixma 6350 24" model alongside the newly announced Pixma Pro 1. For many studios, the Pro 1 will be an excellent proofing device as well as pro- viding output for smaller prints. It’s the first A3+ 12-ink printer on the market and also offers 16-bit tone control and 4800dpi printing. No specifications for gamut are offered, but overall it should be pretty impressive when it goes on sale in Novem- ber.
