into a full-time business and set out on his journey with MPA. Today, he is glad he’s in an affluent area of the country even though it is well supplied with portrait photographers. It is also well supplied with clients, and his skill in photographing people means he can count among them Raymond Blanc and Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. “Raymond is a brilliant client to work with”, Paul told us. “He has a great sense of humour – don’t know what he’s like to work for in the kitchen! He has just commissioned a series of portraits of his team.


“That is really what I am, a portrait photographer, even if I do some commercial work. Most of my commercial jobs involve photographing people.”


Even so, he has a commercial


photographer’s grasp of tech- nique and lighting. He works with Nikon full frame bodies, using both the low-light friendly 12 megapixel D3 and the high resolution 24 megapixel D3X. “For weddings, I will use the D3 for most of the shots but the D3X for groups”, he explained. Although he uses the Nikon Speedlight flash units, he is as likely to set them up for manual exposure as to use their wireless TTL functions. “The infra-red system is fine indoors, but it needs line of sight and with two flash heads I find it more reliable to use a Bowens radio trigger, especially outdoors.” Although he’s constantly learning and has been mentored by Kevin Wilson – whose purity of approach and love of light he holds in high esteem – Paul has
