Town Talk

RESIDENTS in Snodland were amazed to see a huge balloon descend from the sky and land on Potyns Sports Ground close to the community centre. The stunt was part of an ITV documen-

tary, entitled ‘For Better, ForWorse’, which is due to be aired in January. Now in its fifth series, it is described as “a cutting- edge documentary series following cou- ples over the course of their married life together”. Asked why he had chosen Potyns to

land the pilot, from the British School of Ballooning, told Town Talk: “The field pre- sented itself rather well.” Tom Story and Charlotte Collard, from

Essex, had chosen the balloon ride as a pre- wedding treat. Charlotte said Tom had seen ‘For Better, ForWorse’ advertise for a couple who were about to be married and were

SMURFIT Kappa Townsend Hook has applied to Ton- bridge & Malling Borough Council for permission to store 257 containers on two sites in the mill for a maximum of three years. The 12-metre shipping con- tainers are planned to house machine parts required for the construction of a new papermakingmachine, to be located on the main mill site. One planning application is for 108 containers in a vacant car park off May Street, with access from East Street.

Offers of help for church users as doors are shut for final time

AS reported in previous issues of Town Talk, the United Church in the centre of Snodland has closed its doors for the last time. The floor boards had rotted and had to be ripped up and the own-

ers, the United Reform Church, decided the cost to carry out repairs was toomuch. The building, built in 1888, is not listed but is in a con- servation area. A spokesman for the URC, when asked whether planning permis-

sion would be sought to demolish the church and build houses on the site commented: “We are not in a position to say anything at present.” A number of local organisations have been using the church. Snodland Working Men’s Club has stepped in to help and has of- fered the room at the rear of the club to the Beat Project for its Cof- fee and Chat meetings which will be held everyWednesday between 11am and 2pm. Snodland Choral Society has used the church for its concerts and

for practice every Monday evening for many years. It is now using Christ Church, Malling Road. The craft group has moved to the Monks Head, Constitution Hill, on Thursday evenings and the Friday Pop In is now at the Drill Hall, Lee Road.

Tribute to lost WWII airman

THE memorial to Sgt Robert Sloman has been unveiled at Kessel, Netherlands. Town Talk reported in the

June issue that the search was on for relations of the airman who was shot down in the Second World War and whose body was not recovered. He was the son of Frederick Slo- man, manager of the National Provincial Bank (now NatWest) in Snodland High Street, and Mrs Edith Sloman.

happy to have their married life documented. A number of themany people who were at- tracted to Potyns helped the pilot fold up the balloon after the flight.

Request to store containers at mill The other application is for

149 containers on the main mill site, with access from an existing entrance adjacent to the rail line. A spokesman for the com-

pany said it is planning to purchase some equipment which would enable moderni- sation of the production facil- ities at the site. “The mill needs to store this equipment for a temporary period in containers at the site,” he explained. “Great care has been taken in plan- ning the temporary storage

area, to position the contain- ers unobtrusively and, as far as possible, from nearby homes. “The containers are ex- pected to arrive over a short period towards the end of this year and will subsequently be removed using a mobile crane, as and when required. “Disturbance to residents

will be kept to aminimum and containers closest to the resi- dential area will be removed at an early stage in order to vacate that land more quickly.”
